Managing screen time for kids

Screen time is the amount of time spent using devices with screens, such as TVs, computers, tablets, smartphones, and video games. While some screen time can be educational and beneficial for children’s development, too much of it can have negative effects on their health, behavior, and learning.

How much screen time is too much? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following guidelines for children’s screen time:

- Children younger than 18 months should avoid screen time, except for video chatting with family and friends.

- Children 18 to 24 months can watch or use high-quality programs or apps with their parents or caregivers.

- Children 2 to 5 years should limit screen time to one hour per day of high-quality programs or apps that they watch or use with their parents or caregivers.

- Children 6 years and older should have consistent limits on screen time and types of media that fit with their needs and interests.

Why is it important to limit screen time? Too much screen time can have various negative impacts on children, such as:

- Obesity: Screen time can reduce physical activity and increase snacking, leading to weight gain and health problems.

- Sleep problems: Screen time can interfere with children’s sleep quality and quantity, especially if they use devices before bedtime or keep them in their bedrooms.

- Behavior problems: Screen time can expose children to violence, inappropriate content, and cyberbullying, which can affect their mood, self-esteem, and social skills.

- Learning difficulties: Screen time can distract children from homework, reading, and other academic activities, as well as reduce their attention span and creativity.

How can you manage your child’s screen time? Here are some tips to help you guide your child’s screen time and media use:

- Be a role model: Set a good example by limiting your own screen time and choosing high-quality programs or apps that you enjoy and learn from.

- Be involved: Watch, play, or use media with your child and talk about what you see, hear, or do. This can help your child understand and apply what they learn from the screen to real life.

- Be consistent: Establish clear rules and routines for screen time, such as when, where, how long, and what types of media your child can use. You can also use parental controls or apps to monitor and limit your child’s screen time.

- Be supportive: Encourage your child to engage in other activities that are fun, healthy, and educational, such as playing outside, reading books, doing arts and crafts, or joining clubs or sports.

Screen time is part of modern life, but it doesn’t have to take over your child’s life. By following these tips, you can help your child enjoy the benefits of screen time while avoiding the pitfalls.
